 Speaking out for my Saviour

This is my testimony and I love to tell the story!

Praise the Lord Jesus Christ for His marvellous grace and the simplicity of the gospel.

Have you ever been misrepresented? Has anyone ever misrepresented your character or one of your family? Have you ever been accused of something that just was not true? How did that make you feel? If someone said something about your husband or wife that was a lie, would you just let it slide or would you come to their defense?

The other day while listening to the radio, I heard my Saviour misrepresented. This seems to be increasing rapidly as we near the second coming of Christ. You expect it in the secular media, but this was ‘Christian radio.’ I heard a preacher say how “God has predestinated some to Heaven and others to Hell” This is clearly a misrepresentation of the Lord and His gospel. “For God so loved the world…” The scriptures clearly say, “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” 2 Peter 3:9. If God has predestinated some to Hell, how could He then hold them accountable for not repenting? This is against God’s nature to hold a person guilty for something they are incapable of doing. “Shall not the God of all the earth do right?” Then there is the Seventh Day Adventist program.  They teach many things that are true but “a little leaven leavens the whole lump.” They mix the Law (Sabbath) in with grace. There is a fly in the ointment. A closer look at their false doctrine and, as my former pastor used to say about skunks, just hold your nose and point. Then there is ‘Christian rock’ and ‘Christian rap.’ What does ‘Christian radio’ have to offer next, the rosary?

In 1978, at age 33, I met a man that was concerned about my soul. As he began to show me what God had written in His word, the Holy Spirit convicted me of sin, righteousness, and judgment. The word of God exposed my heart and my unbelief. God began a work in my heart that day that eventually brought me to Calvary. As long as I live, I’ll love to tell the story of God’s forgiveness extended to me through the Lord Jesus Christ. O the joy and peace that was mine the day I came to the foot of the cross as a lost, hell bound sinner, with nothing to offer, and reached out to God by faith. I simply believed His invitation: “He that cometh to me, I will in no wise cast out.” “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” What a privilege a born again child of God has to be able to find rest for their soul. “I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.”

I was born and raised Catholic. Mom and dad worked hard to put me through the Catholic school system. I believed in the Trinity, the Virgin birth, the deity of Christ, the death, burial, and resurrection, and the fact that Christ died for my sins. BUT, I had never been born again. The mass is the center of the Catholic Church. In every mass, the priest magically turns the wafer into the body of Jesus Christ and offers Him over and over again as a sacrifice for the sins of the people attending and for the souls in Purgatory. This is done thousands of times a day all over the world. You see, the Christ of Catholicism that I believed in did not finish salvation when He died and rose again, He only opened the door for me and millions of others to gain it through baptism, mass, sacraments, good deeds, penance, novenas, prayers to Mary and the saints, etc., etc. etc., with the final reward being an indeterminate period of time in a place of torment called Purgatory. This is where the ‘faithful’ go to pay the final debt for their sins. Contrast that with the Christ of the scriptures that saved my soul. He said, “IT IS FINISHED”. The Bible says in Hebrews 10:11-14, “And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins: But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God…..For by one offering He hath perfected forever them that are sanctified.” Was I lied to on purpose? No, all these people were sincerely doing what they thought was right. But regardless of how sincere they were, the priests, nuns, teachers, and my parents, had mistakenly misrepresented the God of the Bible! I’m sure it was done out of ignorance.

This brings me back to ‘Christian radio.’ I tuned in to 1050AM the other afternoon just in time to hear two men teaching the listeners how a person is to be saved. They had just read 1Cor.15:1-4, how that Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again the third day. Then they said this and I quote, “The death, burial, and resurrection of Christ is not the whole gospel”. Immediately the Holy Spirit spoke to my heart. This is the same lie that deceived me for 33 years. Here are two guys on ‘Christian radio’ misrepresenting my Saviour. Who knows how many unsuspecting souls, saved and lost alike, are listening. They continued in the presentation of their “12 step program” to become a Christian. I think it went something like this: confess Jesus as Lord, repent of your sins, receive baptism (immersion), and stay faithful until Christ returns. With the exception of baptism by immersion, that is exactly what I believed for 33 years and I was lost and on my way to hell! I wanted to hold my nose and point but I had to drive. Satan’s lie never changes, it just assumes a different disguise. This sounds like Catholicism without the priesthood and mass. Even after doing all they taught, a person still had no assurance of eternal life. “Stay faithful till Christ returns”? What does that mean? Pray one hour every day? Two hours? Four hours? Read your Bible for one hour? Six hours? Twelve hours? Don’t watch any TV? Don’t have one evil thought? One sin and I lose it? Let me ask you something. Have you been faithful every day since you have been saved? Where, in this “philosophy”, is the rest that the Lord promised? This is not eternal life, this is probational life earned by your performance. What they are teaching is this: Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection for your sin and my sin is not sufficient to save! That’s what they said! This is a lie and another gospel. God’s word warns us of this in Galatians 1:6-8, “I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.” These men have perverted the gospel of Christ. Are they self-deceived and ignorant of the truth or are they ministers of Satan? Only God knows. But God’s word commands us to judge the things they teach. “Prove all things.”

Have you ever been deceived? If I were to insult you or embarrass you, you would know immediately. But if I were to deceive you, you might never know it! Deceived people are not even aware they are being misled. God’s word warns us of apostasy and deception that will come in the last days just before Antichrist appears: “Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;” 2 Thes.2:3. God’s word also warns us about people that preach “another Jesus…another spirit…and another gospel.” “For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.” 2 Cor. 11:4,13-15. Did you see that?  “Ministers of righteousness, they will preach baptism, repentance, and good works but they will deny the power of the gospel alone to save!!!! Christ warned that the deception would be in His name, “And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.”

I clearly remember shortly before I came to Christ thinking, “Surely, there has to be more to salvation than just simple faith in what He did for me.” My stinking, rotten, sinful pride wanted to have some small part in the saving of my soul. God had to bring me to the end of self before He could ever help me. “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” Eph. 2:8-10. The gift of God cannot be earned or deserved, only received by faith. “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” 2 Cor. 5:17.

The book of Jude exhorts us to “earnestly contend for the faith once delivered to the saints.” If you love God and His word I would challenge you to defend the true faith against all challengers. There is an offence and a reproach to the cross of Christ. We are to walk as children of light. Light exposes darkness. We live in a compromised society where good is evil and evil is good and this philosophy has spilled over into the Church. The true gospel must be defended. “Let the redeemed of the Lord say so.” If you take a stand, there will be a price to pay but let us say with the apostle Paul: “But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.”

 May God Bless You,

Larry Col.2:8-10
