When The Spirit

Is

 Overwhelmed

Psalms 142:3  When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, then thou knewest my path.

Theodore Cuyler tells of a woman striving to find rest for her trouble and burdened soul. As she sat in her summer house, suddenly through an open window there flew a bird.  Being greatly alarmed, it circled up towards the roof and tried to get out, hurling itself first against the window and then against another.  Flying from side to side, it finally began to pant with fright and weariness. The woman said, poor bird, why do you not come down lower, then you would see this open door and you would fly out easily?  But the bird kept wounding itself against the closed window trying to force its body through every small crevice it saw.  At last its wings grew tired, and it flew lower and lower in its exhaustion until it was on a level with the open door. Then seeing the way of escape, the little feather creature suddenly found freedom.  Soon its song was heard in the trees of the nearby churchyard.  A new light dawned in the mind of the woman.  I, like that poor bird, through my pride and self sufficiency, have been flying too high to see the door which stands wide open, she said.  Her heart was quietened and she realised even as did the psalmist, that though her spirit was now overwhelmed with difficulty, God still had an open door which she could find freedom if she would but stop her struggling and humbly await His direction.  Once she had yielded her will to God, she found the way of escape she was seeking, and her life became a symphony of harmony and praise.  Oh, troubled soul, cease your futile battering against the walls of circumstance; rest in the Lord, look for His way of deliverance and you too will soon be singing songs of gladness and relief.

He giveth more grace when the burdens grow greater, He standeth more strength and the labours increase, to added afflictions He addeth His mercy, to multiply trials, His multiplied peace. Anon.

God often digs wells of joy with the spade of sorrow. Anon
